Turkey

We're done with turkey for a while, thank goodness!
It was on sale at Wal-Mart, so the church freezer filled up halfway, then Pastor placed an order from a bulk supplier. Thinking he was ordering single turkeys he actually ordered 3 cases of 4 each. The price was very good, but we ran out of room.

One of the members took a half dozen and smoked them...which lead to our end of season picnic smoked turkey sandwiches last night. Yummy!
And I've never seen anyone take a turkey apart like K! Goodness! She pulled the legs out, twisted them off, pulled out the wings, pulled the breast off the back, and voila! Two of us cutting the meat up couldn't keep up with her.

Apple whachamacallit

I was making bread and had a piece of dough left that just wasn't enough for a loaf....so I rolled it out thin. Then chopped two slightly withered apples that were being passed over in favor of newer ones, added brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, raisens, and a bit of butter, and spread this over the dough. Rolled it up and sliced it, poured a bit more sugar and water over the top and popped it in the oven.

Of course if everyone likes it, I'll never be able to duplicate it.....

Memorial Day

We ate fried apples, salad, and spaghetti, surrounded by cats and chihuahuas.....
Tomorrow and Tuesday are baking days----we're having a picnic in the park on Wednesday, and I want to bring the sandwich bread. I've been using the recipe on Granny Miller and it's really good.

Our neighbor does wildlife rehab----she's had deer, antelope, coyotes, porcupines, raccoons, squirrels, opossums, and a variety of birds.
Last year she had two Canadian geese, a male and a female. The male had a broken leg, which healed well enough that he was able to leave in the spring with the rest of the wild geese. The female wasn't as fortunate, one wing had to be amputated, and since she isn't paired, the zoo doesn't want her.
About six this morning we heard honking on the wrong side of the house, so we dashed outside to see if the female was out, as she'd be easy prey for dogs if she were to escape. There was a lone goose circling the houses, honking, and the goose on the ground was answering. It appears the male came back for her! It will be interesting to see what develops, as she can't leave the yard. The neighbors may have a family in the back yard.....

Crumbs

Well, we turn in the U Haul tomorrow, and then perhaps life will return to what passes for normal in this neck of the woods...

My guest is moved in downstairs, what remains is really just details, internet, finding things, laundry, etc. The neighbor luckily had just been given a box of sheets that don't fit her bed, but do fit the downstairs bed.

Planted: potatoes, squash, chard, mustard.
tomorrow we'll get some more things in, hopefully by the end of the week we'll be done.

Still reading "A Nation of Farmers", absorbing and digesting. A LOT of it is just the way I grew up, and it feels odd to be encouraged to go back the way I came.

I need to buckle down and push a bunch of orders out the door in the next couple of days, so between that and the garden, I'll be scarce....
